Confidence Band

Definition

The range a forecast or recommendation comes with — “84%, ±7 points” — expressing how certain the estimate is. A wide band far out, a narrowing band as the date approaches and evidence accumulates.

What it tells you

The band is often more actionable than the point. Plan decisions against the range, not the middle: staffing to the low edge costs less than staffing to a wrong point; a group acceptance that only works at the optimistic edge is a bet, not a plan. A band that refuses to narrow as the date approaches is itself information — demand for that date is genuinely unstable.

How to track it

Prefer forecast tools that show their uncertainty instead of hiding it. In reviews, check calibration: outcomes should land inside the stated band roughly as often as the band claims. Consistently breached bands mean the model is overconfident — treat its points with matching scepticism.

Where it fits

The honest packaging of any forward-looking number, and a core reading skill for AI-corrected forecasts. The free Academy covers it in depth: Smart Forecast Enhanced — the longer-horizon hybrid model.
