BAR (Best Available Rate)
Definition
The standard non-discounted rate offered to guests booking directly or through public channels at a given time. BAR is the rate the OTAs see; it’s the reference point for most discount calculations.
What it tells you
BAR is your “start here” rate. Promotional rates are often computed as a discount off BAR. Corporate negotiated rates are often expressed as “BAR minus 15%.”
How to track it
BAR is set by the revenue manager (or pricing engine) and pushed to channels via the channel manager.
Where it fits
The central reference rate in hotel pricing. Rate parity policies typically apply to BAR; segment-specific rates derive from it.
